Emergency: wet, dirty fur around the tail or diarrhoea in a hamster needs a vet immediately. In severe cases hamsters can die suddenly, so don't wait and watch at home [1][2].

"Wet tail" is what owners call diarrhoea in hamsters. It's reported most in young Syrian hamsters, and it's the best-known urgent health problem in pet hamsters [1][2].

What is wet tail in hamsters?

  • It's the everyday name for diarrhoea that leaves the fur around the tail wet and dirty [2].
  • The best-documented cause is proliferative ileitis, a gut infection with the bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis. Merck calls it a serious cause of diarrhoea in young hamsters [1].
  • PDSA uses "wet tail" more broadly, because diarrhoea in hamsters can have several different causes [2].

Which hamsters get it?

Mainly young ones. Merck describes proliferative ileitis in young Syrian hamsters, typically around 3 to 10 weeks old [1]. Any hamster can get diarrhoea, but young Syrian hamsters that were recently weaned or moved to a new home are the group most often named [1][2].

What causes wet tail? Is it stress?

Stress plays a real part: both sources name it as a trigger [1][2]. Things that raise the risk include:

  • Travel, crowding, surgery or another illness [1].
  • A sudden change of diet [1][2].
  • A bacterial infection or gut parasites [2].

Is wet tail contagious?

The sources we used don't confirm exactly how it passes between hamsters [1][2]. One cause is a bacterial infection, and PDSA advises keeping any unwell hamster away from healthy ones [2].

What signs mean "see a vet"?

See a vet immediately if your hamster has:

  • Wet or dirty fur around the tail [1][2].
  • Diarrhoea [1][2].
  • Low energy, or is much less active [1][2].
  • A poor appetite [1][2].
  • Weight loss [1].
  • Signs of dehydration [2].

Can wet tail be prevented?

There's no guaranteed prevention, but you can lower the stress-related risks [1][2]:

  • Handle your hamster calmly, and avoid overcrowding [1][2].
  • Let a new hamster settle into a steady routine before making other changes [1][2].
  • Change food gradually, never suddenly [2].
  • Keep a hamster with signs of diarrhoea away from other hamsters [2].

FAQ

Is wet tail an emergency?

Yes. In severe cases it can cause sudden death, so see a vet immediately rather than watching at home [2].

Why do young hamsters get it more?

Proliferative ileitis, the best-documented cause, is described mainly in young Syrian hamsters [1]. Young hamsters that were recently weaned or rehomed are the group most often named [1][2].

Can I treat wet tail at home?

No. Both sources treat it as needing urgent veterinary care, not home care. Contact a licensed vet straight away [1][2].
