Small, curious and busy at night: the hamster is a burrowing rodent that needs deep bedding and room to run [5][11]. The most important choice is the type. A Syrian hamster must live alone, while dwarf types are smaller and need their own careful setup [10][5]. Here is the quick guide.
Hamster quick facts
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Common types | Syrian, Chinese, Campbell's Russian dwarf, winter white dwarf, Roborovski dwarf [5] |
| Wild home | Burrowing rodents of dry, rocky plains and lightly planted slopes [5] |
| Size | Adult Syrian about 15–20 cm and 110–140 g; dwarf types much smaller [1] |
| Lifespan | Typically about 2 to 3 years [11] |
| Active time | Mostly at dusk and at night [7] |
| Living alone | Syrian and Chinese hamsters must live alone as adults [10][5] |
| Room temperature | Steady 18–21°C (PDSA) or about 18–26°C (Merck) [11][2] |
Syrian vs dwarf hamster: what's the difference?
The RSPCA names five types most often kept as pets [5]. They differ in size, in whether they can share a home, and in the setup they need.
| Point | Syrian (golden) hamster | Dwarf hamsters (Campbell's, winter white, Roborovski) |
|---|---|---|
| Size | About 15–20 cm, 110–140 g [1] | "Considerably smaller" than the Syrian [1] |
| Sharing a cage | Never: adults fight, sometimes to the death [10] | Live in groups in the wild, but pairs often fight at home [10][5] |
| Wheel size | At least 30 cm across [11] | At least 20 cm across [11] |
The Chinese hamster is dwarf-sized but is not a true dwarf species. Like the Syrian, it is naturally solitary and must live alone [10][5].
Can two hamsters live together?
Usually, it is safest to keep one hamster per cage. Syrian and Chinese hamsters must be housed alone as adults, because they fight and can seriously injure each other [10][5].
Dwarf hamsters live in colonies in the wild. Still, PDSA warns that pet Russian dwarfs often fight over dominance, and the RSPCA says sharing needs careful conditions [10][5]. If you are unsure, one hamster per cage is the kind choice.
What cage size does a hamster need?
Plenty of room. PDSA recommends a floor space of at least 100 x 50 cm, and larger is better [11]. A single level is safer than several floors: hamsters see poorly and can be hurt falling between levels [11].
- Material: the RSPCA prefers plastic cages to metal, and advises against wood [6].
- Floor: solid, not wire mesh, which can injure the feet [6].
- Airflow: barred or mesh sides help air move [6].
- Bedding: at least 25 cm deep so the hamster can burrow [11]. Paper-based bedding, aspen or hemp shavings, unscented toilet paper or soft hay work well [11].
- Avoid: cedar and pine shavings, dusty or scented bedding, and fluffy cotton-wool nesting, which can wrap around limbs [2][6][11].
- Wheel: a solid running surface, large enough that the back stays straight [2][11].
Cleaning: spot-clean every few days, and deep-clean once or twice a month [6].
What do hamsters eat?
The RSPCA recommends a good-quality pellet food or formulated seed mix as the base of the diet [8]. Merck notes that pellets with 15–20% protein meet a hamster's needs, and that treats should stay at about 10% of the diet or less [1][2].
- Add small amounts of greens, washed root vegetables and fruit such as apple [8].
- Never feed grapes or rhubarb. The RSPCA warns they can be poisonous to rodents [8].
- Scatter some food around the cage. It encourages natural foraging and prevents boredom [8].
- Keep fresh water available at all times. Clean the bottle often and check the spout isn't blocked [1][2].
Are hamsters nocturnal?
Yes, mostly. Hamsters are most active at dusk and at night. In the wild they can run up to 5 miles (about 8 km) a day [7]. That is why a good wheel and plenty of floor space matter.
Place the cage in a quiet spot, with lights going off at about the same time each night. Keep it away from TVs, computers, vacuum cleaners and running water, which can give off ultrasound [6].
Is a hamster a good pet for children?
It can be, with an adult in charge. PDSA says hamsters are fun to watch but "aren't the cuddliest creatures", and may bite if startled or woken suddenly [10]. The RSPCA stresses that adults, not children, are responsible for a hamster's care [5].
- Always supervise children around the hamster [10].
- Let children offer treats and stroke it gently in its cage, rather than pick it up [11].
- To hold it, cup it in two hands, only a little way above a stable surface, so a fall can't hurt it [7].
- Let the hamster sniff your hands at its own pace first [7].
For children who want a pet to handle more, PDSA suggests rats or ferrets as alternatives [11].
How do I keep a hamster cool in Saudi summer?
Watch the room temperature closely. Merck advises keeping a hamster's home at about 18–26°C, and PDSA recommends a steady 18–21°C [2][11]. Above this range, heatstroke becomes a risk. Below it, a hamster can slip into torpor, a hibernation-like state that is dangerous for pet hamsters [11][6].
Saudi summer temperatures, indoors without air conditioning, can go far above this range. So, as housing guidance based on these ranges:
- Keep the cage indoors [6], in a room that stays air-conditioned.
- Place it out of direct sunlight and away from draughts [6].
- Avoid windowsills and balconies during the hot months.
- Keep the temperature steady; big swings in either direction are a risk [11].
If your hamster seems unwell in the heat, or unusually still and cold, contact a licensed vet promptly. Both states need a vet, not home care [6][11].
What health problems do hamsters get?
Hamsters hide pain well, so they may suffer before you notice [4]. Knowing the common problems helps you act early.
- Wet tail: a serious, sometimes fatal gut illness. The best-known form mainly affects young Syrian hamsters, about 3–10 weeks old [3]. Signs include a wet or dirty tail area, diarrhoea, low energy and poor appetite. It needs a vet urgently [3][12]. Stress, travel, crowding and sudden diet changes raise the risk [3][12].
- Teeth: a hamster's front teeth grow all its life. Check them regularly, and offer safe things to gnaw, such as cardboard or untreated softwood [4][12]. Overgrown teeth stop a hamster eating properly [4][12].
- Lumps: tumours are not unusual in hamsters, often on the belly. Have any new lump checked by a vet [4][3].
- Breathing problems: Merck warns they "can become serious quickly" in hamsters [3].
- Skin: mites are common, especially in older males, and cause dry, scaly skin and hair loss. Ringworm, a fungal infection, can pass to people [3].
See a licensed vet experienced with small mammals if you notice changes in behaviour or appearance, loss of appetite, tiredness, breathing difficulty, eye problems, hair loss, wounds or hot, painful swellings [4][12].
Never give a hamster human medicine. Only a vet should prescribe for it, since some medicines can be fatal to hamsters [4][12].
Did you know? A hamster's cheek pouches stretch all the way back to its shoulders. When they are full of food, the face can look so swollen that owners mistake it for a lump. That is normal [1].
What should I check before buying or adopting a hamster?
- Know the type. Syrian, Chinese or dwarf changes the cage, the wheel and whether it can share [10][11].
- Check the tail area. A wet or dirty tail is a warning sign that needs a vet [3][12].
- Ask about separation by sex. Hamsters can breed very young, so brothers and sisters should be separated by about 8 weeks of age [9].
- Ask for any health record the seller or rescue has, and book your own check with a licensed vet who sees small mammals.
- Plan for costs: a large cage, deep bedding refills, a solid wheel of the right size, pellets and fresh food, gnawing material, vet check-ups and an emergency fund [11][6][8].
Can I bring a hamster into Saudi Arabia?
Confirm first; we can't give steps for this. One unofficial English translation of the pet-import rules of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) names only dogs and cats. It does not mention hamsters or other small pets [13].
That means we found no confirmed rules for bringing a hamster into or out of the Kingdom. Please confirm the current requirements directly with MEWA through the Anaam platform, and with your airline, before making any plans [13]. The destination country's rules apply too. This is guidance only, and rules can change.

Hamster history and fun facts
- The Syrian hamster is native to the area around Aleppo in Syria, which gives it its name [1].
- It was originally golden, but is now bred in many colours and coat types [1].
- A Syrian hamster's pregnancy lasts only about 16–17 days, one of the shortest of any placental mammal [9].
- Babies are born hairless, with closed eyes and ears, but already have front teeth [9].
- Hamsters have scent glands on their flanks, seen as dark spots, which they use to mark territory [1].
Hamster FAQ
How long do hamsters live?
Typically about two to three years, according to PDSA [11]. Good housing, a steady temperature and early vet visits help at every age.
How often should I clean a hamster cage?
Spot-clean every few days, and deep-clean once or twice a month, depending on cage size and your hamster's habits [6].
What size wheel does a hamster need?
At least 20 cm across for dwarf hamsters and at least 30 cm for Syrian hamsters, with a solid running surface [11].
What is torpor in hamsters?
A hibernation-like state that cold can trigger. It is dangerous for pet hamsters, which lack the fat reserves of wild ones. Keeping them indoors at a steady temperature helps prevent it [6][11].
Why does my hamster's face look swollen?
Often it is just full cheek pouches carrying food [1]. If the swelling doesn't go down, or you find a lump, ask a licensed vet.
