Urgent: if a puppy or unvaccinated dog is vomiting, has diarrhoea (especially with blood), stops eating or seems very weak, contact a vet straight away. Early care improves the chances [1].
Parvo is one of the most serious illnesses a puppy can catch. The good news: vaccination protects well [1][2]. Here's what every new dog owner should know.
What is parvo?
- A highly contagious virus that mostly affects young, unvaccinated dogs [1].
- Puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months are most at risk, but any unvaccinated dog can catch it [1][2].
What are the signs of parvo?
- Vomiting and diarrhoea, often with blood and a strong smell [1].
- Tiredness, weakness and loss of appetite [1].
- Fever, belly pain and dehydration [1].
Signs usually start 5 to 7 days after infection, though it can be anywhere from 2 to 14 days [2].
How does parvo spread?
- Through infected dogs' poop, directly or on shoes, hands, bowls and floors [1][2].
- A dog can spread it from 2 weeks before signs appear until 2 weeks after they end [1].
- The virus is tough. It resists many household cleaners and can survive up to a year in the right conditions [1].
Can a dog survive parvo?
Yes. With the right vet care, 70 to 90% of dogs survive [2]. Getting help early makes a real difference [1].
How do I protect my puppy?
- Vaccinate. Puppies get a series of vaccines, then boosters as your vet advises [1][2].
- Until the vaccines are complete, avoid dog parks, pet shops and places many dogs visit [1].
- Some breeds, including German Shepherds and Rottweilers, are reported at higher risk, so don't delay [2].
Did you know? Parvo is a close relative of the virus behind feline panleukopenia (cat "plague"), and some types of dog parvovirus can infect cats too [3].
FAQ
Can my cat catch parvo from my dog?
Some dog parvovirus types can infect cats [3]. Keep both pets' vaccines up to date and ask your vet.
How long should I wait before bringing a new puppy home after a case?
The virus can last up to a year in the environment, so ask your vet about cleaning and timing first [1].
Is parvo only a puppy disease?
Puppies are most at risk, but any unvaccinated dog can catch it [1][2].
