Siberian Husky: Can It Live in Saudi Heat?
Can a Siberian Husky live in Saudi heat? Yes, with real care: staying indoors in extreme heat, shade, cool-hour walks and brushing, not shaving. Size, health and care tips.

Blue eyes, a brush tail and endless energy. The Siberian Husky was developed as an endurance sled dog in the far north [4]. It can live in Saudi Arabia, but only with serious heat care, so start here.
Siberian Husky quick facts
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Origin | Developed by the Chukchi people of north-eastern Siberia as a sled dog [4]. The FCI lists the U.S.A. as the country of the modern standard [1] |
| Males | 53.5–60 cm at the shoulder, 20.5–28 kg [1][2][3] |
| Females | 50.5–56 cm at the shoulder, 15.5–23 kg [1][2][3] |
| Coat | Medium-length double coat: a soft, dense undercoat under smooth guard hairs [1][2] |
| Colours | All shades from black to pure white. Merle and brindle are not in the standard [1][2] |
| Eyes | Brown, blue, one of each, or mixed in one eye, all accepted [1][2] |
Can a Husky live in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, but honestly, it takes work. This is a cold-climate breed, and Cornell's vet school lists thick-coated dogs among those at higher risk of heatstroke [7]. In a Saudi summer, plan for:
- Keep the dog indoors during periods of extreme heat and humidity [7].
- Shade and fresh water at all times [7].
- Walks only in the coolest hours, early morning or late night [7].
- No hard exercise in hot or humid weather, and never a parked car [7].
Should I shave my Husky in summer?
No. Texas A&M's vet school names the Husky among double-coated breeds that should not be fully shaved [6]. The coat works as insulation and helps the dog manage its temperature [6]. Shaving can also change how the coat grows back [6].
Instead, brush often to remove the loose undercoat [6]. Heavy seasonal shedding is normal: the standard itself says the undercoat may be missing during the shedding season [1].
How much exercise does a Husky need?
A lot. The breed's own club says Huskies have a strong "desire to RUN" [4]. No official source sets a number of hours, so think in terms of daily running, play and brain work, timed for the cool hours.
Keep it on a lead or in a secure space. The club advises that a Husky should never have unrestrained freedom, because it may run off into traffic [4]. Some Huskies climb fences, so check yours regularly [5].
Is a Husky good with cats and small pets?
Be careful. The club describes a strong hunting instinct towards small animals, including cats, rabbits, birds and hamsters [5]. Supervise closely and never assume.
With people, the standard describes a friendly, gentle and outgoing dog [1][2]. It is not suspicious of strangers, so it is not a guard dog [4].
What should a Husky eat?
A fit Husky "does not carry excess weight," says the standard [1][2]. No official source gives a Husky-specific amount, so ask a licensed vet to plan portions for your dog's age, weight and activity.
What health problems do Huskies get?
The breed is prone to some eye conditions:
- Hereditary cataracts: in one study, Huskies developed cataracts much younger than other dogs, at about 3.5 years on average [8].
- Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA): an inherited condition that often starts with night blindness. DNA testing can identify affected dogs and carriers [9].
Huskies are also among the breeds with a known zinc-responsive skin condition [10].
Heatstroke is an emergency [7]. Learn its signs in our heatstroke article, and at any sign, go to a vet immediately.
Before you buy or adopt a Husky
- Ask for the health record, the vaccination card and any eye screening for the parents [8][9][11].
- Check the dog has, or will get, a microchip [12].
- A "merle Husky" is not a standard colour and points to cross-breeding [1][2].
- Be honest about fencing, running time and any small pets at home [4][5].
- Budget for food, vet check-ups, vaccinations, eye checks, brushing tools, secure fencing and home cooling.
Can I bring a Husky into Saudi Arabia?
This is guidance only. Rules change, so confirm with MEWA through the Anaam platform and with your airline before you book [12][13].
- Coming in: get an import permit on Anaam, valid for 30 days. The dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination with at least six months of validity left, a veterinary health certificate and its vaccination record [12].
- Leaving: apply on Anaam with the destination country's import permit and a health certificate from a Ministry-accredited clinic [13].
In summer, ask your airline how it handles dogs in hot weather.
Did you know? In 1925, sled dogs raced diphtheria medicine to Nome, Alaska. Afterwards, musher Leonhard Seppala brought Huskies to New England, and the breed was recognised in the U.S. in 1930 [4].

Siberian Husky FAQ
Why do Huskies have blue eyes?
Blue, brown, one of each or mixed eyes are all normal for the breed. Eye colour alone is not a health problem [1][2].
Do Huskies shed a lot?
Yes, especially in shedding season, when the undercoat comes out [1]. Regular brushing helps [6].
Is a Husky hard to keep in hot weather?
It needs extra care: staying indoors during extreme heat and humidity, shade, water and cool-hour walks only [7].
How long do Huskies live?
We did not find a reliable, vet-sourced figure for this breed, so we don't quote one.
