A dry cough that sounds like a goose honking is the classic sign of tracheal collapse. It's common in toy breeds like the Pomeranian, and a few simple habits can make daily life easier [1][2].

What is tracheal collapse?

The trachea (windpipe) is held open by stiff, C-shaped rings of cartilage [1].

  • In tracheal collapse, these rings weaken and flatten [1].
  • The airway narrows, which leads to a long-lasting cough [1][2].
  • It's a chronic condition that slowly gets worse over time [2].

Why does my dog cough like a goose?

The narrowed windpipe causes a harsh, dry cough that owners and vets often describe as a "goose honk" [1][2]. Some dogs also breathe with effort, tire quickly or make wheezy sounds when breathing in [1][2][3].

Is it contagious?

No. It isn't something dogs catch from each other. The exact cause is unknown, but it comes from the dog's own windpipe weakening, and genetics likely play a part [1][3].

Which dogs get it?

Mostly toy and small breeds, and occasionally large dogs [3].

  • Cornell names Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians and Toy Poodles, usually middle-aged or older [1].
  • ACVS adds Poodles and Chihuahuas [2].
  • In a 2024 study of 110 small dogs referred for tracheal collapse, Pomeranians were the second most common breed, at 22.7% [4].

What makes the cough worse?

Cornell lists stress, excitement, exercise, heat and humidity, smoke and pressure on the neck [1]. Some dogs also cough when picked up or when a collar is pulled [2]. Extra weight is linked to it happening more often [3], and to stronger signs [2].

What signs mean "see a vet"?

Talk to a vet if your dog:

  • Has a honking cough that keeps coming back [1][2].
  • Breathes with effort or tires easily [1][2][3].

Emergency: difficulty breathing, gums or tongue turning blue, or fainting. Get veterinary care immediately [1].

Harness or collar?

A harness. Cornell and ACVS both advise a body harness instead of a neck collar or neck lead, so walks don't press on the windpipe [1][2].

How can I help my dog day to day?

There's no known way to prevent tracheal collapse [2]. You can reduce what sets off the cough:

  • Use a harness for every walk [1][2].
  • Keep your dog at a healthy weight [2][3].
  • Cornell lists smoke as a cough trigger [1]. That includes any kind of smoke near your dog, such as bakhoor.
  • Keep your dog out of hot, humid places [1].

In a Saudi summer, that means cool, air-conditioned indoor rooms and short walks outside the hottest hours, since Cornell lists heat and humidity among the triggers to avoid [1]. Read our heatstroke article too.

FAQ

Can tracheal collapse be prevented?

There's no known prevention [2]. A harness, a healthy weight and avoiding heat and smoke help reduce coughing triggers [1][2].

At what age does it start?

Usually in middle-aged or older dogs [1]. In the 2024 study, 91.8% of the dogs were over 8 years old [4].

Is it only Pomeranians?

No. Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Chihuahuas are commonly affected too [1][2].
