Small, chatty and full of life: the budgie is a little parrot from the dry heart of Australia [7]. It is one of the easiest birds to love, but it still needs the right food, space and daily company. Here's the quick guide.
Budgie quick facts
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Other names | Budgerigar; called a parakeet in some countries [7] |
| Origin | Inland Australia: dry grassland, savanna and open woodland [7] |
| Size | About 18 to 20 cm long [7] |
| Weight | About 30 g [7] |
| Lifespan | Figures vary: about 5 to 15 years in vet guidance, about 21 on average in a zoology database [6][7] |
| Nature | Very social flock bird that forms pair bonds [7] |
| Minimum cage | About 50 × 50 × 76 cm, bars about 1.3 cm apart [4] |
Can budgies talk?
Yes, budgies can copy sounds and words [8]. They do it with the syrinx, a bird's voice organ, not vocal cords like ours [8]. In parrots, this copying is linked to the urge to "join in" with their flock, and at home that flock is you [8]. How many words a budgie can learn, and at what age, isn't well established.
How can I tell a male budgie from a female?
In adult budgies of the normal green colour, the cere (the fleshy band above the beak) is a helpful clue [10]:
- Male: a bright blue cere.
- Female: whitish-blue to brown, often browner when she is ready to breed.
- Young males: a pinkish-purple cere that turns blue as they mature.
This cue is described for normal-coloured birds [10], so it may not hold for other colour varieties. Most pet birds can't be reliably sexed by looks, and a DNA test or a vet exam gives a certain answer [9].
What should a budgie eat?
Vet guidance puts a balanced pelleted diet at the heart of a pet bird's menu, with a smaller share of fresh vegetables and fruit [5]. A few things to know [5]:
- Seed-only diets are a risk. They are low in vitamin A, calcium and vitamin D.
- Mixed bowls backfire. Birds tend to pick out the tasty seeds and leave the pellets.
- Weight creeps up. Seeds, nuts, table food and little exercise are common causes of obesity.
Ask an avian vet which diet suits your bird.
What foods are dangerous for budgies?
Never offer these [3]:
- Chocolate, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, and alcohol
- Avocado and onions
- Apple seeds
- Milk products
- Salty or sugary junk food
The kitchen needs care too. Overheated non-stick pans can give off fumes that are highly toxic to birds [3]. Keep your budgie out of the kitchen while cooking. Lead, zinc-coated items and cigarette smoke are also hazards [3].
What size cage does a budgie need?
At least about 50 × 50 × 76 cm, with bars about 1.3 cm apart [4]. Bigger is better. The cage should leave room to climb and play, with toys, several perches and places to forage [1][8].
Pet birds are built for flight, so supervised time out of the cage in a safe, bird-proofed room is part of good care [2].
Should a budgie live alone or in a pair?
In the wild, budgies live in flocks and form pair bonds [7]. Whether a pet budgie truly needs a bird companion isn't settled. What is clear: a lone bird in a small, bare cage is a real welfare concern, both physical and mental [8]. If you keep one budgie, plan for daily time together, play and enrichment.
How do I keep a budgie cool in the Saudi summer?
Birds can't sweat, and their normal body temperature is already high, about 39 to 41°C [2]. Like most birds, budgies are thought to cool down mainly by panting. So:
- Keep the cage out of direct sun and away from hot windows.
- Use a cool, air-conditioned, well-ventilated room.
- Never leave a bird in a parked car.
- Always offer fresh water.
Panting with the wings held away from the body is generally treated as a sign of heat stress in birds. Move your budgie somewhere cooler. If it doesn't settle quickly, call an avian vet.
How can I tell if my budgie is sick?
Birds hide illness well, and waiting reduces their chance of recovery [1]. Watch for small changes [1][2]:
- Eating less, or sleeping more than usual
- Quiet in the morning, or less interested in the family
- Changes in droppings, voice or posture
- Less active than usual
Open-mouth breathing or struggling to breathe needs a vet promptly [2]. Any change is worth an avian vet's opinion, not "wait and see" [2]. Regular check-ups are recommended too [11].
Female budgies and eggs. Budgies are among the birds most often named for egg-laying problems [9]. A female can lay eggs even without a male [9]. If she strains, sits fluffed up and quiet, or her belly looks swollen, see an avian vet promptly [9].
Did you know? The budgie's scientific name, Melopsittacus undulatus, means roughly "wavy-patterned song parrot" [7]. A university zoology database suggests it may be the world's third most popular pet, after dogs and cats [7].
Before you buy or adopt a budgie
- Watch the bird: it should be alert, active and interested in its surroundings [1][2].
- Ask for its health record and any vet or identification documents.
- Set up the cage, perches and toys before it comes home [4][8].
- Plan a first check-up with an avian vet [11].
- Plan for costs: pellets and fresh food, a good cage and toys, avian vet check-ups, and an emergency fund.
Can I travel with a budgie to or from Saudi Arabia?
Check first, before you plan anything. MEWA's pet-import document names dogs and cats only and doesn't mention birds [12]. MEWA does control live bird imports for animal-health reasons, for example with temporary bans linked to bird flu [13][14].
So bird rules must be confirmed directly with MEWA through the Anaam platform before any trip. The destination country's rules apply too. This is guidance only, and rules can change.
Budgie FAQ
How long do budgies live?
Figures vary. General vet guidance gives about 5 to 15 years for small birds like budgies [6]. A university zoology database reports an average of about 21 years in captivity [7].
Can a female budgie lay eggs without a male?
Yes. Egg laying doesn't need a male, so a single female can lay unfertilised eggs [9].
Is a budgie a parrot?
Yes. It's a small parrot native to Australia, and in some countries it's also commonly called a parakeet [7].
Where do budgies come from?
From mainland Australia, where wild flocks roam in search of seeds and water [7].
